Overview |
The path heads north through the Farndale valley before crossing the River Dove and the path up to cross over the moor once more using Rudland Rigg and the Cleveland Way. Pass Baysdale Abbey once home to a Cistercian nunnery, now holiday homes and descend off the moor to the village of Kildale. There is the possibility of making the day shorter by staying in Kildale 17.7km. From there pass Captain Cook’s Monument before reaching Ayton Moor and the hill called Roseberry Topping and the end of the stage at Newton under Roseberry. |
1 - With the Faversham Arms car park behind you, re-trace your steps up hill to the T-junction from the previous stage. At the T-junction turn right, direction Dale End. Pass Spring House and carry on ahead on the permissive path to cross the stream to reach Daleside road.
2 - Turn left and after passing a ruined building on the left, keep ahead around the hill on the right keeping the wall on the left. Cross over the river Dove using the wooden bridge and turn right to pass between two stone gate posts. Continue ahead slightly left uphill through the gate.
3 - Follow the path uphill passing numerous shooting boxes to reach a T-junction. Turn right on Rudland Rigg track. At a crossroads continue ahead on the Cleveland Way to a T-junction. Turn right on the Cleveland Way Bridleway to reach a tarmac road. Continue ahead, direction Kildale to the T-junction. Turn right into the village and then left, direction Glebe Tea-Room and then right passing under the Kildare railway line.
4 - Pass Bankside house and continue up the hill to then turn left and then bear left onto the narrow path, again following the Cleveland Way to reach the Captain Cook monument. Turn right at the monument down to the car park. Turn right and then left up the steps, direction Roseberry Topping. At the path junction bear left through the gate towards Roseberry Topping and keep left down the hill with a stone wall on the left. At the bottom of the hill reach a gate on the left. Turn right.
(To avoid the main road continue towards Roseberry Topping and turn left to follow the footpath around the base of the hill and then around the wood with it on the left to pick up a track to Newton under Roseberry village.)
5 - Pass through two gates and then turn left into the field with a wire fence on the right. Turn right through the gate and then left down the muddy wet track past the farm house to eventually reach the road. Turn left to Newton under Roseberry, take care as it is a busy road
