In our opinion, France is not as well geared up to accommodate Pilgrims / long distance walkers on the Via Francigena as France and Spain are for the more well known Pilgrim route the Camino de Compostela, but don’t let this put you off …..the Via Francigena through France is an amazing walk !

Wild camping is not permitted in France. We carried a tent but preferred to camp in campsites, but didn't find many directly on the VF path. On one occasion, with the permission of the owner, we slept alongside the vegetable patch in a garden.

As we walked through France we chose to book accommodation in advance.  We know of others, however, who finished a day's walk at a church and secured accommodation that way ie villagers came to the church to offer the waiting Pilgrim a bed. This would not have suited us.

It is advisable to carry the Via Francigena Pilgrim Credential / Passport with you.  It is a personal and official document that Pilgrims can have stamped at the beginning of their journey and at each accommodation venue along the way to Rome. With proof of Pilgrim status ie posession of this Pilgrim Passport you are often permitted reduced accommodation rates in B&Bs, hostels, town halls, convents, monasteries and campsites.

The Pilgrim Passport can be obtained from Canterbury or Reims Cathedral along with a Pilgrim blessing, or it is available to download on-line at www.pilgrimstorome.org.uk

Walking can be a dangerous sport.  Walkers should always be suitably equipped, including carrying and knowing how to use a map and compass.
